About the Cover...
Our cover this month features the excellent photography by Sheryll Garbe of our favorite 1874 Shiloh Sharps rifle, converted to the Freund’s Patent by Richard McKinney of Schuetzen Gun Works. This rifle is an old friend and has been used for serious match work before being converted. It is now used for occasional long range shooting as well as keeping the Garbe’s freezer full of deer and elk meat. Built up to represent what would be our desired rifle if we were hunting bison back in the 1870s, it is chambered in 45-100 / 2.6-inch Sharps Straight. If all this piques your interest you will enjoy the article in this issue about how this rifle came to be and our reasons for its features. It’s a great firearm and has given us many hours of pleasure both on the target range and the hunting field. Thanks, Sheryll, for a great image of a favorite rifle.
