In 1894, the newest Winchester lever-action rifle was offered in only two calibers, the .32-40 and the .38-55. Other calibers were introduced as the rifle grew in popularity, but in the years after World War Two, fewer and fewer options were available. The world's most popular deer rifle eventually became a one-caliber carbine, available only in 3040 Winchester. In 1978, Winchester introduced this model with a butt pad and a reinforced receiver, with a new Winchester cartridge - the .375 Winchester, which approximately equals the .44 Magnum in power.
