The diminutive rifle on the cover, which is only 31 1/2 inches overall, with an 18-inch barrel, is properly scaled to its cartridge - the I7 A&M. Barrel-maker Bill Atkinson built the rifle 17 years ago, using a Remington-Hepburn action which he modified extensively. It weighs 6 1/4 pounds, including the Weaver K6 scope in Buehler rings. The .17 A&M, which helped spur interest in the mini-bore, is a necked-down 218 Bee Improved. Bill’s best load, which gives 1 to 1 1/4-inch groups at 100 yards, is 12 grains of IMR-4227 behind a 25-grain Barnes bullet. This load develops 3,850 fps in a 20-inch barrel.
