    • This issue's cover is compliments of William Curry and it shows a nice, old Colt 1896 "New Model" in .38 Long Colt, a pistol cartridge with a definitely "checkered" reputation. William provided some great information on the evolution of the .38 Long Colt from clack powder days to smokeless loadings and its use, both by civilians and the military. I'm sure you have heard of the oft-repeated story about the U.S. Army in the Philippine Insurrection, finding out that the .38 Long Colt was not effective in stopping suicide attacks by the Moros. William's article shows us some of the hard data that spawned that story, as well as good information on barrel and cylinder chamber dimensions. This would be extremely useful information to have when purchasing and revolver in .38 Long Colt.
Thank you, William Curry for a great cover and an excellent article.

    • Our cover photo for this issue comes from Mike Nesbitt and Jerry Mayo. Mike was responsible for the excellent target and Jerry took the great photograph.
For those interested in the particulars, Mike shot the target at 30 feet (two-handed) using his 44 Smith & Wesson reproduction revolver made by Uberti. The load was a 245-grain bullet from a Lyman mould (429184) pushed by 18 grains of Olde Eynsford, lit off with CCI Large Pistol primers all in a case by Starline.
The guys in the Capitol City Rifle & Pistol Club in Olympia, Washington, have been making a specialty of shooting .44 revolvers. Read Mike's story inside to see exactly what they've been doing and how they are doing it.

    • Our cover for this issue has been provided compliments of Shiloh Rifle Manufacturing and Sheryll Garbe. Thanks to Shiloh for making the beautiful firearm and to Sheryll for taking the great photograph to show it off to its best advantage.
The 1877 Sharps was by no means a prolific model of single-shot rifle, but it surely rates as one of the most elegant. Its "plainer" sister, the Model 1874, is well-known throughout the single-shot world, but the Model 1877 is relatively unkown by comparison.
If you would like to acquaint yourself further with this great rifle, check out the informative and interesting article by Steve Garbe in this issue. However, a word of warning; don't blame us if you suddenly find yourself in dire need of an 1877. If you do, however, Shiloh can scratch the itch.

    • The cover of The Black Powder Cartridge News Issue No. 131 features a classic vintage black powder cartridge rifle displayed with period-correct shooting and reloading accessories. Carefully arranged on a textured surface are tools of the trade, including bullet molds, reloading implements, a small mallet, and cartridges laid neatly in both open boxes and rows. Prominently positioned in the center is the rifle itself, showcasing its rich wooden stock and patinaed metalwork, representing both craftsmanship and history. The backdrop emphasizes authenticity and heritage, paying tribute to traditional black powder shooting.

    • Our cover for this issue comes from Bill Mapoles and features two Sharps Model 1853 carbines with an issue sling and cleaning brush. The '53 Sharps is a favorite of Bill's and his third article on this historic firearm is featured in this issue. Bill studies the Sharps carbine and its usefulness from a rifleman's viewpoint, focusing on typical field usage and practical accuracy, as well as the rifle's role in historic events. It makes for very interesting reading and I'm sure you will agree.
