  • About the Cover... This issue's cover features an excellent string measure target shot in the 1890s, by Judson Gould of the Andover Rifle Club in Andover, Ohio. The photograph was sent to us by good friend Mark Barnhill, who has a great appreciation of fine old target rifles, their accoutrements and history. mark shoots those rifles as well, and is regular competitor at the Canal Fulton Ramrod Club matches in Canal Fulton, Ohio.
The image here is one of Judson Gould that Sheryll broke out of the group photo featured in the article on string measure in this issue. Mr. Gould was obviously a serious rifleman. However, I don't think any of the gentleman featured in the group photograph were anything but serious rifleman. We wish we know more about Mr. Gould, and to that end, we will be doing some more research. In the photo he appears to be holding an underhammer rifle, possibly made by H. V. Perry, and fit with a full-length scope, very likely made by R.C. Rice, a known maker in that time period and who is also in the group photo.

The Gould string measures 7 3⁄4th inches and would be a winner in just about any string measure match going. Not many shooters could replicate this level of shooting in match conditions, even with modern equipment.
Thanks again to Mark for a great cover shot of some excellent shooting done by one of the old 40-rod masters. - Steve Garbe

  • This issue's cover comes from friend Harvey Pennington, avid participant in the Matthew Quigley Buffalo Rifle Shoot for many years. "The Quigley," as it has come to be known, is the most successful black powder cartridge rifle shoot in the world. Typically, it boasts over 600 shooters, but this year saw a drop in numbers due to inclement weather. There was, however, a hard core of riflemen that stuck it out in defiance of rain and mud; the story is a good one and you can read all about it in this issue.

The Black Powder Cartridge News is the only journal in the world dedicated to firing black powder. Each issue focuses on the rifles, cartridges and matches that make black powder fun to shoot.  In this Issue: From the Editor by Steve...
