    • About the Cover... This issue's cover features a statue of frontiersman and buffalo hunter extraordinaire, Jim White. The Statue of White is currently on display at Old Trail Town, in Cody, Wyoming, where Jim White's remains were eventually interred. Leo Reminger has provided us with another of his excellent articles on this famous hunter who seemed to be involved with more than his share of notable happenings and adventure on the western frontier. If one was looking for a larger-than-life character for an action-packed novel, Jim White surely fits the bill. Leo has chronicled much of White's life and it makes for very interesting reading, to say the least. I, personally, am strongly drawn to Jim White's story as it is presentative of the strong-willed and self-sufficient frontiersman of the Old West. Check out Leo's article in this issue and see if you don't agree. Again, we'd like to thank Leo Reminger, for continually providing the News with informative and interesting articles about the western frontier.

    • The cover photograph for this issue is from good friend and regular contributor Miles Gilbert. Miles has always been a well-versed student of the Old West and has sent us this interesting account of the death of the Apache Kid. Many noted characters on the Arizona frontier were connected to the Apache Kid, but probably the most famous was Al Sieber. I think this cover photograph is a classic image of one of the greatest frontiersmen of the Old West.
Half of Al Sieber's adventures in life would have been plenty for any normal human. Civil War veteran, hunter, miner, scout... Al was all of these things. Check out his story, along with the Apache Kid's that are included in this issue of the Black Powder Cartridge News. - SPG

    • Our old friend and regular BPC News contributor Miles Gilbert is responsible for the issue's cover featuring a great photograph of James H. Cook. Mr. Cook led a fascinating life on the western frontier and was a character that Miles has done considerable research about. You would be hard pressed to find a better man to "ride the river with" than Jim Cook, who was an excellent rifleman, hunter and gentleman in a time when those qualities very seldom accompanied one another. Read Mile's article in this issue and see if you don't agree that James H. Cook was indeed a rare personage in the Old West.

    • Our cover for this issue was sent to us, once again by William P Mapoles, a regular contributor and firearms experimental archaeologist. A long title to simply say that Bill enjoys exporing commonly held ideas about historic firearms and coming up with data based on real use. His article dealing with the .56-50 cartridge in this issue, is no exception. Bill points out several erroneous assumptions made over the years about the famous Spencer repeater and the .56-50 cartridge.
The cover photo show a restored (and converted to centerfire) Spencer carbine and the successful results of a javelina hunt, as the old Spencer was obviously up to the task. Personally, we think the .56-50 cartridge was a potent, short-range, black-powder cartridge and I can see how it would be as useful in the hunting field now, as it was originally. We would like to thank Bill for his submission and encourage our readers to check out his article and see if you don't agree.
