    • Our cover for this issue is a bit of an intriguing mystery. Not concerning who we received it from; as that was Bill Mapoles, noted frontier historian and regular contributor to the Black Powder Cartridge News. However, as you will read in Bill's excellent article, "Death in the Desert" in this issue, the circumstances around why this old Colt ended up in the desert with two fired cases and three live rounds left, can be open to much conjecture. Given where it was found, almost anything would be possible. It really makes one wish these old firearms could talk... although running the "backtrack" on them is almost more fun than knowing what they actually did. Read Bill's article and see if you agree; or maybe you will come up with another scenerio that he hasn't thought of.

    • About the Cover... Many of you will recognize the guy on the cover of this issue as Michael L. Venturino, also known to his many friends as "Duke". Putting him on the cover od the news is bittersweet, as he passed away on June 9th of this year, due to a long battle with heart disease. In this photo, Mike has obviously concluded a successful hunt with a vintage Winchester Model 1894 in .38-55, if I recollect the rifle. Mike loved old repeaters almost as much as single shot rifles and used them for many of his hunting endeavors. At a time like this, we like to remember those who have passed with a good photo that shows their zest for life. Mike was surely having an excellent day when this photo was taken and it's a great image to remember him by. Rest in peace, old friend. - Steve Garbe
