    • Our cover for this issue is a bit of an intriguing mystery. Not concerning who we received it from; as that was Bill Mapoles, noted frontier historian and regular contributor to the Black Powder Cartridge News. However, as you will read in Bill's excellent article, "Death in the Desert" in this issue, the circumstances around why this old Colt ended up in the desert with two fired cases and three live rounds left, can be open to much conjecture. Given where it was found, almost anything would be possible. It really makes one wish these old firearms could talk... although running the "backtrack" on them is almost more fun than knowing what they actually did. Read Bill's article and see if you agree; or maybe you will come up with another scenerio that he hasn't thought of.

    • The cover for this issue is a tribute to one of America's great gunsmiths, Norman S. Brockway. We are sure that many of today's gun enthusiasts will not recognize his name, nor the super-accurate firearms he virtually handcrafted, but much of what Brockway did, paved the way for what we now define as benchrest shooting. The very definition of a "rugged individualist," Brockway showed typical Yankee ingenuity in all of his work and indeed, his life.
Mark Barnhill provided us with the old newspaper clipping detailing much of Brockway's life. The clipping itself was part of the wealth of information that Harold "Polecat" Porter had accumulated during his years as a shooter and collector of muzzleloading slug rifles. "Polecat" was himself quite a character and avid black-powder shooter, who served to span the time between many of the old-timers and today's black-powder riflemen.
The newspaper interview of Brockway revealed several facts about his life that we had not heard or read before. Brockway was truly a gunsmith and rifleman who could shoot them as well as he could build them. Check out the story inside this edition and see if you don't agree.

    • Our old friend and regular BPC News contributor Miles Gilbert is responsible for the issue's cover featuring a great photograph of James H. Cook. Mr. Cook led a fascinating life on the western frontier and was a character that Miles has done considerable research about. You would be hard pressed to find a better man to "ride the river with" than Jim Cook, who was an excellent rifleman, hunter and gentleman in a time when those qualities very seldom accompanied one another. Read Mile's article in this issue and see if you don't agree that James H. Cook was indeed a rare personage in the Old West.

    • Our cover for this issue was sent to us, once again by William P Mapoles, a regular contributor and firearms experimental archaeologist. A long title to simply say that Bill enjoys exporing commonly held ideas about historic firearms and coming up with data based on real use. His article dealing with the .56-50 cartridge in this issue, is no exception. Bill points out several erroneous assumptions made over the years about the famous Spencer repeater and the .56-50 cartridge.
The cover photo show a restored (and converted to centerfire) Spencer carbine and the successful results of a javelina hunt, as the old Spencer was obviously up to the task. Personally, we think the .56-50 cartridge was a potent, short-range, black-powder cartridge and I can see how it would be as useful in the hunting field now, as it was originally. We would like to thank Bill for his submission and encourage our readers to check out his article and see if you don't agree.

    • The cover photograph for this issue is from good friend and regular contributor Miles Gilbert. Miles has always been a well-versed student of the Old West and has sent us this interesting account of the death of the Apache Kid. Many noted characters on the Arizona frontier were connected to the Apache Kid, but probably the most famous was Al Sieber. I think this cover photograph is a classic image of one of the greatest frontiersmen of the Old West.
Half of Al Sieber's adventures in life would have been plenty for any normal human. Civil War veteran, hunter, miner, scout... Al was all of these things. Check out his story, along with the Apache Kid's that are included in this issue of the Black Powder Cartridge News. - SPG
